Carol Beckett is a 39-year-old mother from Manchester. She was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer in September 2007 and received part of her brother's liver in a Living Donor Liver Transplant in January 2008.
Carol Beckett (39) is lucky to be alive. In September 2007, she found she had a rare liver cancer and was given one year to live. Carol, mother of then 2-year-old Gracie, was told she would need a liver transplant to survive. Due to the shortage of organ donors, she feared she would die before an organ from a dead donor became available.
Carol then found out that a new procedure, called a living donor liver transplant, was available. This was where part of a liver from a living person could be transplanted into the person needing a transplant. This was possible due to the amazing ability of the liver in which it can re grow to full size again within a matter of months.
Three members of Carol’s family came forward to be tested for this, and her brother Stephen was found to be the most suitable person. At risk to his own life, Stephen saved Carol’s life in a ten hour operation on 29th January 2008.
To express her thanks for this wonderful gift, Carol is now an Advocate for Live Life then Give Life. She gives media interviews to tell her story, sets up stalls to invite members of the public to join the organ donor register and also gives presentations to schools and NHS staff to highlight the importance of organ donation. Her big sister, Sue, will also be running the London Marathon to raise money for the charity.
Carol has worked in the NHS since 1991, and after a career break, has recently gone back to work part time in the NHS as a Senior Information Analyst. She still has time to spend time with her daughter, Gracie (5), who started school in September 2009.
There is a chronic shortage of organ donors in the U.K. and consequently over 1,000 people die each year whose lives could have been saved by a transplant. Carol wants to raise awareness of this plight and wants people to consider what they would want should one of their loved ones require a transplant – organ donation saves lives so please sign up today.
